Above Ground Pool Winter Protection

Air Pillows For Above Ground Pools

Air pillows pull double duty and are a necessary part of the pool closing process. They help protect your above ground pool during the winter by absorbing the pressure of expanding freezing water and help prevent ice from cracking your above-ground pool walls and they also create a raised center point under your winter cover that helps rain, snow, and ice move toward the edges instead of sitting heavy in the middle of the pool cover which can put undue stress on the outer edge of the cover and the pool ledge possibly damaging both.

Why Use An Air Pillow?

An air pillow is placed under your above ground winter pool cover before the cover is secured. It helps lift the center of the cover so water and ice are encouraged to move outward instead of collecting in one giant frozen puddle of regret.

1

Helps Relieve Ice Pressure

The pillow gives expanding ice room to push inward instead of pressing directly against the pool walls.

2

Raises The Cover Center

A raised center helps rain, melted snow, and debris move toward the outside edges of the cover.

3

Protects Your Winter Cover

Less standing weight in the center of the cover can help reduce stress during winter weather.

Easy Winter Cover Setup

Inflate the air pillow, position it near the center of the pool, and secure it so it stays in place while the winter cover is installed.

Simple installation tips:

  • Inflate the pillow only partially so it has room to compress.
  • Place the pillow in the center area of the pool.
  • Use rope or grommets to help keep it from drifting.
  • Install your winter cover over the pillow and secure the cover properly.

Choosing The Right Air Pillow

Larger above ground pools may use one large pillow or multiple smaller pillows depending on the pool size and cover setup. The goal is to raise the center area enough to help water and debris move away from the middle.

Smaller Pools

A single air pillow is often enough for many smaller round or oval above ground pools.

Larger Pools

Larger pools may benefit from a larger pillow or multiple pillows to better support the cover.

Heavy Winter Areas

Areas with heavy snow and ice should pay extra attention to pillow placement and cover drainage.

Important Winter Pool Cover Note

Air pillows are designed to help manage winter cover stress, but they do not replace proper winter cover installation. Always secure your winter cover correctly and remove excess standing water when needed.
